Defending champions Sri Lanka are set to take on the home side, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on August 29 in a Group B clash of the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Both teams have enjoyed a good run of form in this format so far this year, with Sri Lanka winning 10 of their 14 games, while UAE have managed six wins from seven. However, the two teams have met only twice in WT20Is, with Sri Lanka emerging victorious on both occasions.

At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka have played only one WT20I so far, which they lost against India during the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. UAE, meanwhile, will look to make the most of their home conditions and stun the defending champions.

There is an interesting similarity between the two teams: both have inspirational all-rounders leading from the front. For Sri Lanka, it is Chamari Athapaththu, while Esha Oza has been the key figure for UAE. Both have consistently delivered for their respective teams over the years.

Even in 2026, Athapaththu has been Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer in WT20Is, with 476 runs in 14 innings, including a century against Ireland at the Women’s T20 World Cup. With the ball, she is also their second-highest wicket-taker, with 12 wickets.

Similarly, Esha leads UAE in both batting and bowling in WT20Is this year. She has scored 277 runs in seven innings and also picked up 13 wickets.

Hence, both leaders will once again look to deliver a match-winning performance for their respective teams and kick-start their Asia Cup campaigns with a win.

Battle to watch out for: Chamari Athapaththu vs Esha Oza

One intriguing battle could be between Athapaththu, the batter, and Esha Oza, the bowler. As a left-handed, aggressive opener, Athapaththu could face a challenge from the in-form off-spinner Esha.

On a Dubai surface where the ball can grip and hold up slightly, Esha could be introduced early into the innings with the aim of dismissing the Sri Lankan skipper and giving UAE an early breakthrough.
