Heather Graham turned disappointment into redemption with a superb all-round display as Welsh Fire defeated Southern Brave by four wickets in Cardiff on 3 August, ending the visitors’ unbeaten start to the ongoing Women’s Hundred.

The experienced Australian was named Player of the Match after producing a performance that combined discipline with the ball and composure with the bat. More importantly, it was Graham who made sure Welsh Fire did not let another winning position slip away against the same opponents.

She first played a key role in restricting Southern Brave to 121/5, mixing up her pace and variations cleverly to finish with two wickets. But it was during the chase that she truly stamped her authority on the contest.

Welsh Fire were wobbling at 49/4 against one of the tournament’s most effective bowling attacks when Graham joined captain Georgia Wareham at the crease. The pair steadied the innings with a crucial 21-run stand before debutant Grace Thompson injected fresh momentum with a brisk 16 from 12 balls, leaving Welsh Fire needing 17 from the final 12 deliveries.

With Graham anchoring the chase, Niamh Holland arrived to play a decisive supporting role, striking two timely boundaries to reduce the equation to just four runs from the final three balls. Holland then took a single to hand the strike back to Graham against Lauren Bell.

Even a late run-out scare, after Southern Brave wicketkeeper Lizelle Lee fumbled, could not derail her. Graham kept her composure, stayed unbeaten on 35 from 28 balls and completed the winning runs to inflict Southern Brave’s first defeat of the season.

The knock carried extra significance because of what had unfolded in the reverse fixture on 22 July in Southampton. Graham had starred with the ball then too, claiming four wickets as Southern Brave were restricted to 126/7. Yet Welsh Fire squandered a commanding position, collapsing from 87/2 to lose by eight runs.

Graham had arrived at the crease in that match with Welsh Fire requiring just 18 runs from 16 balls, only to score three as the chase unravelled. In Cardiff, presented with another opportunity to finish the job, she made no mistake.

Reflecting on the victory at the post-match presentation, Graham said: “We were on the losing side of a tight one in our very first game, so to get the job done today feels really good.”

The victory lifted Welsh Fire to fourth in the standings with eight points from five matches, while Southern Brave suffered their first setback of an otherwise impressive campaign.
