Another thrilling London derby in the ongoing Women’s Hundred saw MI London edge London Spirit by three runs at Lord’s on August 6 to keep their campaign alive. Their bowlers finally clicked as a unit, defending 122 to register a much-needed first win of the season.

The chief architect behind the victory was star all-rounder Melie Kerr. On a sticky surface where batters from both sides struggled throughout the 200-ball contest, Kerr produced a superb counter-attacking unbeaten 69 off 41 balls at a strike rate of 168.29.

Heading into the tournament, Kerr had endured a disappointing Women’s T20 World Cup as New Zealand captain. She then made a quiet start to this season’s Women’s Hundred, scoring just 87 runs in her first four innings. Interestingly, her best effort during that period was an unbeaten 49 against London Spirit in the previous London derby, which ended in a tie.

This time, against the same opposition, Kerr stepped up again. She registered only her second fifty in Women’s Hundred history and her first in the competition since 2023, with both half-centuries coming at Lord’s.

Her innings stood out because of the way she accelerated. MI London suffered a dramatic collapse, losing eight wickets for 67 runs after 75 balls. At that stage, Kerr was batting on just 21 from 22 deliveries, having struck only one boundary.

She then completely changed gears, smashing 48 runs from her next 19 balls, including four fours and four sixes, to lift MI London to a competitive 122. In the end, those extra runs proved decisive. She also chipped in with the ball, returning figures of 1 for 20 from her 20 deliveries.

Kerr was deservedly named Player of the Match and admitted afterwards that batting had not been easy.

“Pleasing to get a win today,” she said during the post-match presentation. “Tough position to be in. It was known that the pitch would be hard for run-scoring, that the ball was sticking in it.”

What better time to register her highest score in the Women’s Hundred, and only her second half-century in the competition, than in a must-win London derby? Kerr rose to the occasion as MI London emerged victorious in a contest they simply had to win.
