Asian Games 2026: India, Sri Lanka Cruise into Semi-Finals After Dominant Quarter-Final Wins

In the women’s cricket quarter-final of the Asian Games, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first, setting up a strong total before restricting Malaysia to 74/7. With the win, Sri Lanka booked their place in the semi-final, where they will face Pakistan.

Sri Lanka posted 158/4, led by Chamari Athapaththu’s 63 off 37 balls. She rebuilt the innings after an early run-out and added 23 with Hasini Perera. Kavisha Dilhari’s 42 off 25 provided the late acceleration as Sri Lanka scored 58 in the final six overs.

Malaysia’s chase struggled from the start, slipping to 25/3 by the sixth over. Winifred Duraisingam (28 off 47) and Mahirah Izzati Ismail (24 off 42) tried to rebuild, but the scoring rate remained low. Sri Lanka kept taking wickets at the death, restricting Malaysia to 74/7 in 20 overs.

In the second quarterfinal of the day, India faced Japan and sealed a dominant victory by 8 wickets. Winning the toss and fielding first, India restricted Japan to 57 runs in 19.5 overs.

Japan, who were put to bat first, were reduced to 24/1 after 6.2 overs, with Ayaka Kato-Stafford holding the innings together with a gritty knock of 25 runs from 47 balls. Apart from Kato-Stafford, Japan’s batters struggled to score, with Haruna Iwasaki contributing 10 off 22 balls.

India’s bowlers kept the pressure on, led by Charani’s impressive 4/10 in four overs. Shafali Verma took two wickets, while Deepti Sharma and Shreyanka Patil picked up one each. Nandini and Kranti Gaud went wicketless.

India then made quick work of the 57-run target, chasing it down in just five overs. Shafali smashed 40 off 15 balls, while G Kamalini, promoted to open, was dismissed for a duck. Bharti Fulmali scored 6 off 7, and Richa Ghosh remained unbeaten on 12 off 6 balls. Japan’s N Yasumoto and Kato-Stafford picked up one wicket each, but India completed a dominant win by 8 wickets.
