BCCI doubles down on Asia Cup trophies

The BCCI has doubled down on its assertion of bringing the Asia Cup trophies — men’s and women’s — to India in the future. India are the reigning champions in both men’s and women’s categories.

“(The) Asia Cup trophies, we hope it will come one day,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told reporters after the cricket board’s 95th Annual General Meeting on Friday. “I will not give you a timeline, but I can assure you that both the trophies will come and land up in this office (headquarters) of the BCCI.”

Last Sunday, after winning the women’s Asia Cup in Dubai, Harmanpreet Kaur and her teammates followed the Indian men’s team and refused to accept the trophy. It came along expected lines. The BCCI had informed the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in advance that if the Asian body’s president Mohsin Naqvi attended the presentation ceremony and India won the title, the team wouldn’t accept the trophy from him. Apart from helming the ACC, Naqvi is also Pakistan’s Interior Minister and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chair.

Last year, the Indian men’s team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, also did the same after winning the Asia Cup at the same venue. The decision came in the wake of Naqvi’s provocative repost on social media. He called the Pahalgam terror attack last year that killed 26 civilians a “drama”.

There is a school of thought that Naqvi deliberately tried to play to the (Pakistan) gallery despite the BCCI’s reservation. He ostensibly wanted to divert attention from Pakistan’s shambolic show on the field. Their women’s team were bundled out for 55 against India at the recently concluded Asia Cup. Their men’s team imploded in England, suffering a whitewash in the three-Test series. The series also saw seven players’ ouster, a change of head coach, a show-cause notice to the selection committee and the start of an inquiry against Muhammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq.

The ACC administers cricket at the Asian Games, and there’s a possibility that Naqvi, who owns an aeroplane, can drop in at Nagoya, Japan, before the men’s final on October 3 to muddy the waters again. The Indian men’s and women’s teams are hot favourites to win the gold medals at the Asiad.

Obviously, the BCCI is not reacting to something that is hypothetical, but Saikia is going to Japan on October 1.

Meanwhile, coming back to the Asia Cup trophies, Naqvi’s term as the ACC president ends in April 2027. He will not get an extension.
