The Indian team has opted to skip training ahead of the second ODI against the West Indies at the ACA Stadium on Wednesday. Shubman Gill and his teammates were scheduled to have an optional practice session but decided to cancel it. Both teams arrived in Guwahati on Monday. Team India Head Coach Gautam Gambhir visited the Kamakhya Temple on Tuesday morning.

India registered a thumping eight-wicket victory in the first ODI at Thiruvananthapuram, chasing down the target with 50 balls to spare. The West Indies, however, will go ahead with their scheduled afternoon training session.

It remains to be seen whether the Indian team management make any changes to the playing XI for the second ODI. Mohammed Siraj was surprisingly left out of the first ODI, with India opting for a different bowling combination, while Naman Dhir was handed his ODI debut. With several key bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel and Arshdeep Singh, unavailable due to their Asian Games commitments, Siraj was expected to be India’s primary fast-bowling option. Instead, Shubman Gill’s side went in with Dhir as the second all-rounder.

The West Indies, meanwhile, are set to be further strengthened in the batting department, with Sherfane Rutherford likely to join the squad in Guwahati. Justin Greaves, who smashed his maiden ODI century against India in the series opener, spoke about his innings to the WICB media team.

According to Greaves, “I’m happy to get the first one out of the way. I think I started pretty well, got off to a quick start and then it was about maintaining that tempo throughout the innings.”

Speaking about his opening partnership with John Campbell, Greaves said, “The pitch for the first ODI was pretty good, as you can see from the scores in the game. It was just about keeping things low-risk, playing proper cricket shots, getting to the ball and then taking it from there.”

On his role in white-ball cricket, the Barbadian cricketer said, “I think it has come down to a lot of hard work and discipline. It’s also about understanding my role as an opener in white-ball cricket, to bat as long and as deep as possible and help the team post big scores.”
