Shubman, Rohit power India to record run chase in Guwahati

It took a herculean effort, and Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill delivered it in spectacular fashion as India pulled off a record chase against the West Indies in the second ODI at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium on Wednesday. In front of a packed crowd, the Indian openers produced a breathtaking batting display to chase down 406 with eight wickets in hand and 39 balls to spare.

Rohit smashed a 72-ball century, with his innings featuring 10 fours and six sixes, while Gill followed up his hundred in the series opener with another three-figure score, reaching the milestone in just 62 balls.

Gill remained unbeaten on 233, while Ruturaj Gaikwad finished on 31 not out as India completed the second-biggest run chase in ODI history, behind South Africa’s 438 at The Wanderers two decades ago. The emphatic victory also gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, with one game to play.

Gill completed his century off just 62 balls and took another 55 balls to reach 200. It was his second double hundred in ODIs, the previous one coming against New Zealand in Hyderabad on January 18, 2023. Rohit and Gill put together a stunning opening partnership of 255 runs in just 26.2 overs, laying the foundation for India’s record-breaking chase.

Rohit started with positive intent, smashing Alzarri Joseph for 14 runs in his first over. Some of the shots he played during his knock brought back memories of a vintage Rohit. He also reached 12,000 ODI runs with a single off Roston Chase in the 16th over, becoming only the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to achieve the feat.

The former India captain was eventually dismissed leg before wicket by Jayden Seales for 101.

Virat Kohli walked in after Rohit’s dismissal and wasted no time getting into the act. He pulled Seales for a flat six before hitting consecutive boundaries. However, he was dismissed for 29, with Sherfane Rutherford taking a brilliant catch at deep backward point off Shamar Joseph, with India on 320/2 in 32.1 overs.

Earlier, West Indies piled up 405 after being put into bat, their highest total at the venue. John Campbell (101 off 68), Shai Hope (104 off 94) and Amir Jangoo (101 off 71) all struck hundreds as the visitors surpassed India’s previous best ODI total at the venue, 373/7 against Sri Lanka in 2023.

Campbell smashed his second ODI hundred after opening the innings with Keacy Carty, who was dismissed for nine off 10 balls, caught brilliantly by Naman Dhir off Prasidh Krishna.

Hope brought up his hundred in 91 balls, with eight fours and three sixes, taking his ODI century tally to 20 and moving past Brian Lara. He was dropped on 27 by Kohli.

Jangoo, who scored 58 in the first ODI, reached his hundred in 70 balls and was eventually dismissed for 114.

Debutant Auqib Nabi conceded 84 runs in nine overs, while Gurnoor Brar gave away 96 and took two wickets. Prasidh returned figures of 1/45, while Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja claimed two wickets each. Naman Dhir went wicketless for 38 before twisting his ankle. Kuldeep also reached the milestone of 200 ODI wickets.
