When we produce a batting talent like Sooryavanshi, we will see improvements: Wasim Akram on PSL not producing talented batters

Pakistan legendary pacer Wasim Akram has questioned the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in relation to not producing top-quality batting talents, while comparing its progress with the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Akram also took the example of India’s young batting sensation, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, noting that he is the kind of talent Pakistan need to develop.

Speaking to YouTuber Furqan Bhatti, Akram said PSL has produced some good bowlers but has struggled to create similar impact with regard to the batting side of things. “It has been 10 years since the PSL started, but has a single batter been produced by the PSL?” said Akram. “Yes we have produced a few bowlers but tell me have we produced any noteworthy batting talent? I think when we produce a batting talent like the 14-year old (Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, 15 years) then we will see improvements coming through.”

Sooryavanshi has established himself as an ultra-aggressive batter in the IPL, and gone on to make his India debut against England. His rise has highlighted the talent emerging through India’s domestic system and the IPL.

Akram also highlighted the need to bring back a strong club-cricket system in Pakistan. “Club cricket needs to be revived if we want improvement in red-ball cricket. The PCB should spend 100 million rupees each in Karachi and Lahore, as talent comes from club cricket,” he said.
