A huge Group B clash in the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup awaits at the Dubai International Stadium on September 9, as defending champions Sri Lanka take on Bangladesh. Sri Lanka have been ruthless so far, securing a nine-wicket win over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and a 75-run win over Indonesia. Bangladesh have also begun their campaign with a 71-run win over Indonesia.

However, when it comes to the rivalry, it has been a one-sided affair. In 16 WT20Is so far, Bangladesh have won only three, while Sri Lanka have emerged victorious on the other 13 occasions. In fact, the most astonishing part is that after winning back-to-back games in 2012 and 2014, Bangladesh have won only one of their next 14 WT20Is against Sri Lanka – a six-wicket victory in 2023.

In the Women’s T20 Asia Cup as well, Sri Lanka lead the head-to-head with four wins from five meetings, with Bangladesh’s only victory coming in 2012. Earlier this year, Sri Lanka also toured Bangladesh and whitewashed the hosts 3-0 in the three-match WT20I series.

Therefore, considering the history and Sri Lanka’s current form, along with the ruthless approach they have shown so far, can Bangladesh end their current six-match WT20I losing run against Sri Lanka? Can they finally win a Women’s T20 Asia Cup clash against them for the first time since 2012?

That is the question to be answered under the lights at the Dubai International Stadium.

Battle to watch out for: Harshita Samarawickrama vs Nahida Akter

Undoubtedly, Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu will be a key player. But one battle that could be particularly interesting is Harshita Samarawickrama vs Nahida Akter.

Harshita has not managed a strong start in this tournament, but she holds an excellent record against Bangladesh, scoring 377 runs in 10 innings at an average of 53.85 and a strike rate of 114.24, including three fifties.

Hence, against her, especially during the middle overs, experienced left-arm orthodox spinner Nahida Akter could be Nigar Sultana Joty’s best option. Nahida was also impressive against Indonesia, winning the Player of the Match award for her three-wicket spell of 3/15.
