The International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket South Africa will unveil the schedule for the 2027 ODI World Cup at 6 pm local time (9.30 pm IST) in Cape Town on Thursday, October 1. According to a source in the know, the launch will take place as part of a programme, with India and Pakistan potentially being placed in the same group once again. The World Cup is scheduled to begin on October 2 next year.

“The schedule is being given the final touches, but going by previous ICC events, you can assume that India and Pakistan would be in the same group,” said the source.

The India-Pakistan fixture, despite losing some of its sheen as an on-field rivalry, remains hugely lucrative for broadcasters and commercial partners. On the field, however, Pakistan have not beaten India in the 50-over format at an ICC event since June 2017, when they won the Champions Trophy final.

In the 14-team World Cup, the top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings will secure automatic qualification, with September 30 the cut-off date. Bangladesh, despite currently being ranked ninth, will qualify because South Africa, ranked third, are already guaranteed a place as hosts. Zimbabwe will also feature as a co-host.

The remaining four teams, including two-time champions West Indies, will have to come through a qualification process. Namibia are also a host nation, but are not eligible for automatic qualification.

The World Cup will have three phases before the semi-finals and final. The first phase will feature a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked of the 14 teams, who will play a round-robin league. The top team will progress to the next stage.

In the second phase, 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six and play a round-robin league. The top three teams from each group, along with the best-placed team across the two groups, will progress to the Super 7 stage.

The third phase, the Super 7, will feature 21 league matches, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals.

Thursday’s event in Cape Town will also see the release of match tickets, although fans will first have to register for the ticket ballot to purchase them.
