Wicketkeeper-batter Shai Hope led from the front with an unbeaten century as the West Indies pulled off a stunning six-wicket win over India while chasing a daunting target of 250 in the second T20I in Ranchi on Friday.

Hope remained unbeaten on 102 off just 45 balls, smashing six boundaries and nine sixes at a strike rate of 226.66. The West Indies captain carried his excellent form into the T20I series after scoring two centuries in the preceding ODI series. He made 104 in the second ODI in Guwahati before remaining unbeaten on 162 in New Chandigarh. He also scored 52 in the first T20I in Lucknow.

During the post-match presentation, Hope, who was named Player of the Match, reflected on the challenge of chasing such a huge target.

“We knew that it was going to be a tough chase,” he said. “It was always going to be challenging. When we got that partnership between me and Rovman [Powell], and then Sherfane did what he did.”

Hope shared a crucial 120-run partnership off just 54 balls with Sherfane Rutherford, who smashed 84. The pair kept the required run rate under control and put the West Indies firmly on course for victory.

“I really believe we need to bat a lot better in partnerships,” said Hope. “We just wanted to get going with the rate and keep up with the game.”

Rutherford also reflected on the importance of his partnership with Hope, highlighting the freedom he enjoyed while batting alongside his captain.

“Honestly, it was just about enjoying it,” he said. “I know that once Shai is there as well, it’s even better because I can be as free as I can be. And he’s going to be there until the end.”

The West Indies batter was full of praise for Hope’s consistency and ability to deliver under pressure.

“Honestly, I don’t think there are enough words to describe him,” said Rutherford. “He is a phenomenal player. Even I look at him and think, how can you do it so steadily, so often? I look at him and think he inspires me a lot to work hard.”

Hope also shared an unbeaten 76-run stand off just 26 balls with Romario Shepherd, who remained not out on 34, to complete the remarkable chase.

Both teams will now travel to Indore for the third T20I as the series moves to its next stage.
