India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer shed light on the conversation he had with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who was benched for the entirety of the recently concluded home series against the West Indies.

Sooryavanshi remained on the sidelines for the five-match T20I series despite being fit and available. The Indian think tank opted for its trusted opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.

During the post-match presentation, Iyer was asked about the conversation he had with Sooryavanshi. The Indian captain said:

“So I just keep telling him, you’ll get your opportunity. You see, there are two batters who have probably won the… not probably, they have won the World Cup for you, and they’ve been consistent with their run-scoring as well. So, you know, if you are consistent with your processes and your mindset is a bit light, don’t think too much about getting an opportunity right now. I know what must be going on in his mind, especially after a phenomenal IPL season. But you have to wait sometimes, and we’ve got two fantastic openers who have been consistent throughout. And yeah, that’s the interaction I basically had with him, right from the Afghanistan series.”

Before the West Indies series, Sooryavanshi played in both matches at the Asian Games, including the final. The 15-year-old sensation will next travel to New Zealand for the five-match T20I series.
