IND-W vs ZIM-W: Nikki Prasad laments India’s fielding issues: “There were some misfields”

India all-rounder Nikki Prasad has made an immediate impact since being included in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, contributing with both bat and ball as India took an unassailable 2–0 lead in the series.

After scoring 39 off 35 balls in the opening T20I, Nikki returned with an impressive bowling performance in the second match, taking two wickets for just seven runs in her two overs of off-spin. India once again produced a dominant display, with the young all-rounder playing her part in a strong team performance.

Speaking after the second T20I, Nikki admitted that there were areas in which India could have performed better but insisted that the team’s overall progress remained positive.

“I think in every practice session and every match, we try to make as many improvements as possible,” Nikki said at the press conference. “There were some misfields here and there, but overall, our team’s progress has been really good.”

India’s bowling was particularly sharp in the second match, with the bowlers sticking to a clear plan of attacking the stumps. Nikki said the clarity of their approach helped the team execute its plans better.

“Our plans were very clear. We wanted to attack the stumps as much as possible. I think all the bowlers were very sharp in executing the plan,” she said.

The 21-year-old also praised India’s batting unit, highlighting how the batters bounced back after the first game.

“The flow of the batters is not the same every day. We came back and talked about what we could do better. It was very basic: we would focus on our strengths as much as possible.”

Nikki specifically pointed to Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma as examples of this approach.

“All the batters, Smriti ji and Shafali ji, went out and played to their strengths,” she added.

For Nikki, the series has also provided an opportunity to experience the Indian team environment for the first time. She believes the culture within the side remains strong and that captain Smriti Mandhana is carrying it forward.

“This is also my first time with the Indian team. Over the years, I can see how good the team environment has been. And I think Smriti di is carrying the same thing forward,” she said.

Nikki also spoke about handling performances and pressure. Rather than dwelling on a poor outing, she prefers to identify the lessons learnt and move forward.

“If I keep thinking that my performance is not good, then I think I will play the next matches under the same pressure. So I think about what the lessons were from a match that didn’t go well and how to apply them in the next match,” she said.

With India already leading 2–0, Nikki will look to build on her encouraging start as the team aims to complete a clean sweep of the series.
